DVD
It’s wet, or cold, or you’re sick, or you just feel like staying in at home and watching a movie… So you head off to the local video store… You head to the new release section but there doesn’t seem to being anything that grabs your attention… so you head down the action isle, then the drama isle, then the thriller isle, and then somehow it’s half an hour later and you find yourself in the art-house section wondering why you can’t find a movie to watch!
The really frustrating thing is that you know there were movies you missed at the cinema always intending to “catch that one on DVD” and now when you need a DVD you draw a blank…
Well this page is going to be that list of DVD’s… The list of movies you want to watch next time you’re in that situation. Some of the movies will be old ones you haven’t seen for a while. Some will be new releases that you missed at the cinema. And some will the movies you think are worth seeing more than once!
Here goes…
Movies you missed at the cinema:
- Slumdog millionaire
- In Bruges
- Meet Dave
Movies you haven’t seen for a while:
- The Goonies
Movies worth hiring again and again:
- V for vendetta

A few films I want to see, but haven’t yet:
* Death at a funeral
* Die Hard 4 (I’ve hired it 3 times, never watched it)
* Be kind rewind
* The assassination of Jesse James
Watched 3 of my 4 ‘wishlist’ films recently…
I really liked ‘Death at a funeral’; found ‘Die Hard’ to be fairly predictable, yet fun; and ‘Jesse James’ to be really good, but could have benefitted from a bit more editing to trim it down and make it great…
The local video shop hasn’t heard of ‘Be Kind Rewind’ yet, so I’m on the hunt…
Feel free to add your wishlist to this page, even if I’ve seen them it’s always good to have options when going to the video store.
Last night I hired:
* Rambo
* Into the Wild
* Sicko
Only watched Rambo, got a bit bored, but the villages in the movie were very similar to the refugee camp we visited on the Thai/Burma border.
Fi and I really enjoyed Into the Wild. It was a bit slow, but a great story (and soundtrack!)
I still haven’t seen ‘Into the Wild’, had to return it before I got a chance to watch it.
‘Sicko’ was ok, but after a while I got the message – the American health care system sucks… but it just kept going, and going, and going… I think that perhaps the fact that he felt the need to keep repeating himself says more about his understanding of the American education system?
Last night I recommended 2 movies to a friend and I reckon that they’re worth another hire…
* Office Space
* Empire Records
I saw Empire Records a couple of years ago but remember being really impressed by it.
On the In Cinema category, I really want to see Hancock, I know it’s Will Smith and all, but from what little I know about it I really like the concept.
Hancock started out really good, but after about 20 minutes all the jokes are done, and it turns into a really average super hero film.
Wait for weekly DVD, or when you need an extra film to make it ‘3 for $10′.
I never actually saw Empire records… I’ll have to get that one.
And i give the thumbs up for office space!
Wouldn’t mind seeing Guy Ritchie’s latest “Rock ‘n Rolla”. It’ll probably be rubbish, but I give him so much credit for “Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels” that I’ll watch virtually any old thing that he puts onto film.
Still want to see “Gran Torino” and “The Wrestler” also.
Watched ‘In Bruges’ recently.
Loved it. A little bit ‘Lock, Stock’, but not overly so.
