Validating your HTML against the W3C standards is good for many reasons, not the least of which is Search Engine Optimisation.
Ensuring that your HTML is written correctly will make sure that Search Engine Spiders interpret your web pages correctly, thus giving them every chance that they will be indexed correctly.
Another great website to find tutorials on how to do some of the fancy or more tricky things with design. Actually this is good for learning to do the not so tricky to, but rather just those things which you don’t know how to do yet.
I mainly use this for the Photoshop tutorials, but they have tutorials from so many more programs, it’s worth a look.
If you want to learn HTML, XHTML, and CSS this is a GREAT place to start.
When I started building websites I think this was these were the very first tutorials I went through and they gave me a really good understanding of the basics.
