I’m glad I finally got to see the pumpkins…

Dicker, Music 4 Comments

…well i actually went and saw the Pumpkins back in 1998 (I think), but that show doesn’t count because they were in their boring ava ‘adore rock ballad kina phase and they didn’t play much rock…

However this time I saw them at the V Festival in Centennial Park (an early birthday present from James) and the Pumpkins went off!All the good ol’ hits from Siamese dream, Melancholy, and a couple from the new ‘Zeitgeist’ (which I knew) and it was rock all the way. I could’ve been 16 again. They had the classic Pumpkin sound and everything you’d want from a top rock band - although Billy was wearing a dress… but hey… you know… maybe he’s got Scottish roots…?

image009.jpg
image008.jpgThe rest of the festival was so, so. The Jesus and Mary Chain, and Queens of the Stone Age rocked out pretty hard, although for the first time ever the sound wasn’t loud enough… or though maybe I’m still deaf from the ultra loud Cure concert…? But I don’t think the festival had enough speakers on the main stage. I’m not Dr Sound or anything, but even if more speakers don’t improve the sound, it at least looks louder.

Overall, it was pretty good. Nice location, some free stuff, and good sunshine. I really would’ve liked to sit there and read the weekend paper had i he presence of mind to bring one in with me, but it’s probably not a good look, reading a broad sheet at a music festival… But for me, I was really just there to see the Pumpkins and I wish i had made a shirt with that slogan on it before I went: “I’m just here to see the Pumpkins.”

Run, Fat Boy, RUN!

Movies, Peter, Sport 3 Comments

Whilst this could be referring to my continued efforts at fitness, it’s also the title of a movie we saw this evening.

It’s quite funny, with a number of ‘guffaws’, but I wasn’t moved to hold the seat in front of me, whilst choking with laughter, which is my mark of a ‘classic film’ (see Hot Fuzz).
It had many of the elements of the other Simon Pegg films (such as Dylan Moran), but missed a few others (Nick Frost, and “you’ve got red on you”).

Well worth a DVD viewing, but probably not worth $15. We used some movie vouchers that we’d been given last year, so it was probably well worth what we paid…

I enjoyed the preview for the new Will Ferrell film (Semi-Pro), so that could be my next venture to the city of expensive drinks and popcorn…

The final winter

Dicker, Movies No Comments

Watched this movie last night.

the_final_winter_2007_poster.jpgFilmed in 2006, released in 2007, just came on DVD this week.

It’s a movie about a rugby league football player for Newtown Jets back in the 80’s when league was transforming from the amateurish hardman’s game to the corporate marketing game of today.

It’s not so much about league than it is about the characters. The movie could’ve probably worked with any football code… In a nut shell: this is about what happens to a man who has to give away the game because his body is falling apart, the game is changing, and his family is suffering… But his whole identity and ambition is wrapped up in the game of rugby league.

It’s an interesting journey to see how he handles it.

Overall I liked this film (not just because it was filmed down the road at Henson Park). The character stories fascinated me, maybe because of my footy background and the honest portrayal of the locker room and footy culture. Some of the scenes are not as well acted as they could’ve been, but they’re good enough and maybe Matty Johns wasn’t the best cast for the coach - not because of his acting (that was pretty good) but because he didn’t really look old enough.

Go see it. Worth the rental. Good Aussie film.

A challenge to the right wing and the atheist

I read this article in the SMH on saturday. A good article with some clear logic and an interesting challenge to right wing complainers and the anti-religious. You can find the original article here but I’ve pasted the article by Lisa Pryor below just in case the link fails.

World’s best knock knock Joke

Dicker, General 4 Comments

Without understating it in anyway… I have come up with the world’s best knock knock jokes.

By posting them here on the net, I just want to legitimate my claim to these jokes so that when you hear them from other people (as they do the rounds), you can say “I know the guy who made up those jokes”.

Here goes…

  • Knock, knock.

who’s there?
I’m up.
I’m up who?
You’re a poo?

  •  Knock, knock.

Who’s there?
What’s up.
What’s up who?
You don’t know what a poo is?

  • Knock, knock.

Who’s there.
I made up.
I made up who?
You made a poo? Well done, congratulations!

Boom. Boom. Tish.

Sunday Television!!

Chris, General No Comments

Just saw an ad promoting the return of Wide World of Sports!!

I LOVED that show growing up, can’t wait to sit in front of the telly and watching sport for a few hours on a Sunday!

Actually Sunday is normally jammed packed with sports, but there’s just something about the mix you get on Wide World of Sports.

Work

Chris, General 2 Comments

So work has gotten in the way of blogging, I suppose the whole new experience should actually create a better blogger out of me, but alas it has not…

I have this bad habit when it comes to blogging, like I understand that blogging is about sharing your life, as it is, whatever it may be, but I have a very rare condition called something like better-not-blog-until-i-have-enough-time-and-a-good-subject-that-will-be-interesting-slash-cool-slash-whatever, I’m sure not many bloggers find themselves in a similar position so I suppose that I will need to deal with it alone…

Woe is me, yadda yadda yadda, moving on, suppressing emotions and feelings now…

So, anyway, work…

Is going good, a little slow at the moment, but I’m sure it will bounce back.

I’m now working at a Volkswagen dealership here in Dubbo, Iverach Volkswagen, my main role is Finance & Insurance but I also do a bunch of other things, one of which is sitting in the RTA for hours on end, some may hate the sound of that, but I love to get out of the office. The RTA is a great place to sit and watch how different people react to certain situations. Not being in any great hurry I believe I view the RTA very differently to all the other customers waiting there, of course what helps is being paid to ’stand in line’ .

I notice the majority of people come to the RTA with very little patience, and with high hopes to get in and out, but I think a couple of the things that they don’t remember is that you only have to go there once a year, maybe twice if you’re unlucky, and the work you are asking the RTA to do could take about half an hour to process, the same as everyone else there, so I say expect a little wait.

It’s just interesting to hear the comments, some a little sly, some blatant, about the amount of time they’ve spent waiting.

So I also do a lot of paperwork too, never had one of those jobs before, or been the organised paperwork kinda guy, but so far so good, staying on top of stuff!!

Not sure what else to say, except learning a bit about cars, still can’t really hold a real car conversation with the guy’s, but maybe one day!

I might be becoming a convert…

Chris, General No Comments

To VOLKSWAGEN…

I’ve always enjoyed a nice car, but have never really known all that much about them, well I still don’t but hope that that will change soon.

I have become a MASSIVE fan of this car though:

Golf R32

It’s your little, well hatch back kinda car I suppose you would call it.

But here’s a quote on the performance of car:

“The Golf R32’s exceptional 3.2 litre V6 performance engine, delivers a formidable 184kW at 6,300rpm of power and a hefty 320Nm of torque at 2,500 – 3,000rpm.”

How’s that for power to weight ratio!

P.S. 0-100km/h in 6.5 seconds.

More about it here.

Or I just love the theory behind this one…

Golf GT

It may only be a 1.4L, it’s the same size car, but being a Golf GT Sport they decided to twin charge it!

I’m sure that they thought something along the lines of ‘drivers want performance from the moment they put their foot down’, so instead of just whacking a turbo charger in it that would kick in at higher revs they put in a supercharger as well to kick in at the lower revs, thus giving you go from the moment you put your foot down!

PS. They do bigger cars too, like their R50 5.0 L V10 TDI 4WD… ok ok, so that comes in a ‘normal’ model too, a V6…

snghflpagh…

…is what I said when my friend Mike told me to hold the position for 30 more seconds…

I’ve just been down at Wanda doing some fitness training with a couple of the guys from church. One of them is a bit of a personal trainer, and he’s been taking some of the guys out for a while now. I’ve been meaning to join them, but tonight was the first time I actually made it.

I’m really excited, because I was able to run quite well on the sand, and able to keep up (mostly) with the pace of the various exercises we did. The water was a really nice temperature, so we cooled off at the end of our run with a quick dip, then went up to the park for some boxing.

I could hear the Rocky theme music playing the whole time (in my head), but unfortunately it didn’t help my technique too much.

The only real downside was that I was eaten alive by biting insects, so now I have some lovely big lumps all over my back, arms, neck and legs.

Bring on next Thursday!
