makes you think, don’t it?

We can look in wonder at the sheer size of the universe we live in, or marvel at the intricate detail of the cells that make up our bodies, but still, so many people think this all happened as the result of an explosion of… well… nothing…

makes sense to me…

Lady in the water

Dicker, Movies 3 Comments

I saw this movie with Fi last night because a friend from work recomended it to her…

It was dumb.

M. Night Shyamalan was the director, and I liked the sixth sense, but this was dumb.

Fi might say some good things about this movie on her blog, but all you’ll get from me is… dumb.

Working Bee skills

Dicker, General No Comments

I came… I saw… I shovelled mulch… crap loads of mulch.

It happens every year at college that we have a working bee, well, 2 working bees a year in fact, and each time we shovel crap loads of mulch. I mean tones!

But today we also painted stuff, and watched cricket in the lounge room… not so bad.

It’s good getting out in the fresh air and doing some manual labour. It reqiures little thinking, and there’s a good feeling of accomplishment and productivity when you look back and see an ocean of mulch you’ve shovelled with your own 2 blistered hands.

A couple of guys in 1st year used to be chippies and have put there skills to good use building new door jams and hanging new doors on all the cabins. They’ve done a great job, and i think they rightly get a deduction in their college fees for all their hard work.

The usefullness of their past trade begs the question of myself… What the hell can I do with a sprinkler fitter trade behind me? …not much. Oh yeah, I can weld, I can do some plumbing, I can cut and thread pipe, drill holes, and a whole bunch of stuff, but not without my sprinkler tools. And there’s not much requirement for specialist sprinkler skills when there’s no sprinkler system… I could move the fire hose reel to an equally convenient spot to where it is now just to make myself feel extra useful, but really…

Nevertheless, one day my day will come to shine! I’ll be at a big Youthworks meeting in St Andrews house at Townhall and a sprinkler will go off and a beaming ray of sunshine will flood through the window and illuminate my face, the halelujah chorus will sound, and I’ll spring to my feet to save the day! …………..By calling the contracted fitters to come and fix it…

Americans are strange (part 9)

Just got sent this article:

which is strange enough (”it was an angel… there was an angel there”), but then when I clicked on a related link (how to save fuel mileage), I was shocked at some of the ‘Captain Obvious’ statements made:

- Clean out the fridge and cupboard rather than going out for a meal.

 - Order delivery. Sure someone is using gas, but the driver will usually be delivering to multiple people thus having a more efficient trip.

- Get together with friends and family at each other’s homes. This way only some, not everyone, will be traveling.

Hot, tired.

It’s Friday afternoon, and I’m feeling hot and tired.

So as I open a cold beer, I’m going to relax with a series of You-Tube highlights of the week…

First up: a young Shaolin Monk apprentice going through his daily exercise routine…

SHAOLIN KID STRETCHING - Click here for this week’s top video clips

Next: Obi Wan Kenobi going car shopping (thanks to Dead Ringers)…

and finally: a clip from the show It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia:

Thanks to my sources, you know who you are…

a little reward…

fuzz.jpgIt would be wrong to suggest that I completed a 2 year diploma of theology just so I could reward myself with a double movie boxset of Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the dead - for starters Hot Fuzz wasn’t even out when I started my diploma, and secondly the privilege of studying God’s Word full time is reward enough!

Now I have you false accusers soundly subjugated, there is nothing wrong with a little extra reward for hard *cough* studying *cough cough*; And might I add, I feel no guilt whatsoever, especially when I picked it up for the bargain price of $15.99!

Woohoo!

The affordable big breakfast lives on in the inner west!

Dicker, General 1 Comment

The inner west of Sydney has many great things going for it (apart from the fact that I live and go to church there), not least of which is it’s great cafes, however… someone seems to have created the equation that with great quality must come great price.

It has been sometime sice I’ve found a real bargain when it come to great food in a great cafe. The Camperdown cafe on Camperdown park has my favourite “camperdown breakfast sandwich” (which is a mouthful to say and eat); Cinqe cafe in Newtown has the best openning hours, chai tea, and nice atmosphere; Deus cafe has got the motorbikes; Sweet Belem in Petersham has got the best pastries; and the last drop cafe in Dulwich Hill is just close and handy for a new study area…

Not since the early year of my sprinkler fitter apprenticeship have I seen a Big Breakfast for $6.50 that couldn’t be finished (admittedly it was from a dingy takeaway food joint in Smithfield), and not for years have I seen a decent Big Breagfast for under $12.50 anywhere in Sydney, But… the affordable-more-bang-for-your-buck Big Breakfast lives on in the inner west!!!!

This morning Fi and I came upon the Funky Monkey cafe in Enmore, and all my hopes and dreams were realised. The Big breakfast is $10.00 and is big enough to block your arteries after 3 mouth fulls. the coffee and hoit chocolate only $2.50 each, and it’s all goooood! The decor of the place is smooth and relaxing, the staff are loveable, and when I ordered my Big Breakfast the waitress offered me tomato sauce without me even having to ask (!). It was soooo exciting!

My only fear is that they’ve only been open for a month, and maybe not enough people know about the place, so maybe they won’t stay open for long (ahhhhhh). But I’m determimned that they should get good patronige and stay open. Good food and good service and good prices deserve reward. It’d be sad to see this place close while all the other expensive places stayed open charging upwards of $12.50 for an anorexic sausage, a drizzle of bacon, one fat bit of toast and a miniature egg and only tomato sauce on request! Where’s the justice then?

We must eat at the Funky Monkey for justice requires it to be!! Hoorah!

Pizza and xbox and PS2

Dicker, General 1 Comment

I have a teenage guys Wednesday afternoon group that meets every week at 4:30 g-wa_2.jpgfor bible study and a bit of PS2 time. We’re creatively called G-WA:43o( pronounced Gee Waa which is a bit reminiscient of “the ocho”).

Last night we kinda had an early end of year celebration to celebrate the guys in year 10 finishing their school certificate - just an excuse really… So we partied hard with a 5hr session of xbox, PS2, and pizza, and junk food. We had Halo playing on 2 linked xboxes - 4 players each battling against each other - there was the projector and a TV for the xboxes, and a 3rd TV for the PS2 so I could advance a bit further on my need for speed underground 2 game which I haven’t really played for months.

We had a great night, plenty of history building, and I even improved my NFSu2 game and actually got up to 8 kills on Halo - but still got owned…

Aaaaah ministry… I just love it.

Double Done

Dicker, General 1 Comment

So Pete’s done but I’m double done!

Finoto le diploma of theology. I would be tempted to say that was my last exam ever, but I’m going back next year to do NT Greek half a day a week on Wednesdays, which really should be alot easier to manage than doing 4 subjects, even if I am learning a new language… I do know some greek words from school, but… I can’t repeat those here (or anywhere) so… Yasou Dikanos.

I think I will continue to celebrate the finito le diploma by getting a passionfruit, and banana gelato tonight at Darling Harbour, mmmmmm…. Who’s in!?

I May Not Be The Expert on Everything.

Chris, General 3 Comments

Sometimes I forget that I may not know everything, and that the qualified person standing next to me may just know more about a subject than me.

Not a severe case of this, but I had one of those situations where someone asks a question and I went to start answering it when I had to say to myself “Hey! Shut Up, what do you think you’re doing, they’re probably directing that question to the person standing next to you who actually works in the industry related to it, and of which you really know not much at all!!”

I think I caught myself before I got a full word out and just had to act like I was going to interrupt with another conversation or something…

But enough about me, let me deflect this post from myself onto someone else… This situation reminded me of something that happened at Narwee High, it was during that PD and Health stuff we did in year 11 or 12, when those gay people came to talk to us about, well, being gay. How was that for an experience!! At a school like ours we knew that that session could involve a bit ‘tension’ or something.

Anyway so a student asks a question about something to do with the gay lifestyle or whatever, and I think it was a certain science teacher who jumped in before the gay people could say anything with something like “I think I can field this one…” WHAT??? Why?? It was a shock, and quite funny, to see, I can’t remember if he realised exactly how that looked and the rumours that may have been started by some of the students around him…

Something else, unrelated, that would have happened during this session… It was being held in the music room, so as soon as everyone starting filing in you would have heard about a dozen keyboards start playing their demo tune, in a staggered fashion, one after the other. Doo do la do, Doo do la do, Doo do la do, doo da dant dant dant. (is that how it went pete??)
